What Entertainment and Nightlife is there in East Grinstead?

As you might imagine East Grinstead is a town which offers lots of options for entertainment and eating out with a wide selection of bars, gastro pubs, coffee shops and gourmet restaurants alongside the usual fast food outlets. As for nightlife, there’s plenty to pick from. If theatre is your thing then you’ll love the Chequer Mead theatre which showcases everything from West End shows to 1960s musical tributes to ballet to Mozart. Live music is well catered for at the Railway Tavern and Tommy Flynns to name but two local venues. Throughout the year East Grinstead is host to many indoor and outdoor events such as craft sessions, local guided walks and sports events. The East Grinstead Museum right in the centre of the town is worth a visit to study the artefacts and history of the town and its surrounding area. One of the museum’s permanent exhibitions is called ‘Rebuilding Bodies and Souls’ and tells the story of pioneering plastic surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe and the ‘Guinea Pig Club’.

East Grinstead proudly boasts the heritage Bluebell Railway line and this is the place to experience the famous Golden Arrow Pullman Dining train or afternoon tea service.

Explore the ancient Ashdown Forest, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and famous as the home of Winnie-the-Pooh.

For those who love to shop you won’t want to miss the town’s historic High Street with its medieval buildings and small courtyards where you can find many small independent and specialist shops, pubs and cafés. This ancient part of town is where traditional markets and livestock markets were held and you may be interested to learn that East Grinstead was granted a charter by Henry 111 in 1247 which permitted a weekly market and an annual fair and these were held in the High Street.

Finally, if you fancy travelling further afield for even more excitement, remember that East Grinstead is a mere 27 miles from London and 21 miles from Brighton, both of which are served by excellent transport links.
